The Most High (Al-A‘la)
Verses 1-19 GROUP_1571 87.1-19
1
سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى
Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,
2
الَّذِي خَلَقَ فَسَوَّى
who created all things and gave them due proportions,
3
وَالَّذِي قَدَّرَ فَهَدَى
who determines the nature [of all that exists], and guided it accordingly;
4
وَالَّذِي أَخْرَجَ الْمَرْعَى
who brings forth green pasture,
5
فَجَعَلَهُ غُثَاء أَحْوَى
then turns it into black stubble.
6
سَنُقْرِؤُكَ فَلَا تَنسَى
[O Prophet!] We shall make you recite the Quran so that you will not forget any of it—
7
إِلَّا مَا شَاء اللَّهُ إِنَّهُ يَعْلَمُ الْجَهْرَ وَمَا يَخْفَى
except whatever God wills; He knows both what is manifest and what is hidden—
8
وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلْيُسْرَى
We shall facilitate for you the Easy Way.
9
فَذَكِّرْ إِن نَّفَعَتِ الذِّكْرَى
Remind, if the reminder can be of benefit.
10
سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخْشَى
He who fears [God] will heed the reminder,
11
وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا الْأَشْقَى
but it will be ignored by the most unfortunate,
12
الَّذِي يَصْلَى النَّارَ الْكُبْرَى
who will enter the Great Fire,
13
ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَى
where he will neither die nor live.
14
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّى
He who purifies himself,
15
وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّى
who remembers the name of his Lord and prays, shall indeed be successful.
16
بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا
But you prefer the life of this world,
17
وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَى
although the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
18
إِنَّ هَذَا لَفِي الصُّحُفِ الْأُولَى
This indeed is what is taught in the former scriptures—
19
صُحُفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى
the scriptures of Abraham and Moses.

Commentary
(a) It is quite evident that there is planning in the creation of man and the world. This planning strongly implies that there must be some purpose behind this creation. And indeed, this purpose has been revealed to man through divine revelation. However, only that individual learns a lesson from revelation who is of a receptive nature. Such people will be introduced to the eternal bounties of God. But those whose arrogance prevents them from accepting guidance, will be doomed to being cast into the flames of the eternal fire.
